A note on inflation and transplanckian physics

چکیده
In this paper we consider the influence of transplanckian physics on the CMBR anisotropies produced by inflation. We consider a simple toy model that allows for analytic calculations and argue on general grounds, based on ambiguities in the definition of the adiabatic vacuum, that effects are expected with a magnitude of the order of H/Λ, where H is the Hubble constant during inflation and Λ the scale for new physics, e.g. the Planck scale.

Mimicking transPlanckian effects in the CMB with conventional physics
We investigate the possibility that fields coupled to the inflaton can influence the primordial spectrum of density perturbations through their coherent motion. For example, the second field in hybrid inflation might be oscillating at the beginning of inflation rather than at the minimum of its potential. Although this effect is washed out if inflation lasts long enough, we note that there can ...
متن کاملCosmological Perturbations from a New-Physics Hypersurface
Within a broad class of inflationary models we critically analyse the way initial quantum fluctuations on a new-physics hypersurface (NPH) affect standard predictions for large-scale cosmological perturbations. We find that these so-called transplanckian effects crucially depend on the definition of the “vacuum state” in particular on which Hamiltonian is minimized on the NPH in order to select...
متن کاملChain inflation and the imprint of fundamental physics in the CMBR
In this work we investigate characteristic modifications of the spectrum of cosmological perturbations and the spectral index due to chain inflation. We find two types of effects. First, modifications of the spectral index depending on interactions between radiation and the vacuum, and on features of the effective vacuum potential of the underlying fundamental theory. Second, a modulation of th...
متن کاملTransplanckian signatures in WMAP3?
In this note we investigate how a possible signal in the WMAP3 data of rapid oscillations in the primordial spectrum can be accomodated into an effective model of transplanckian physics including back reaction. The results, if due to a real effect, would indicate the presence of a low fundamental scale – possibly the string scale – around 2.2 · 10−5Mpl.
متن کاملOn the consistency of de Sitter vacua
In this paper the consistency of the de Sitter invariant α-vacua, which have been introduced as simple tools to study the effects of transplanckian physics, is investigated. In particular possible non renormalization problems are discussed, as well as non standard properties of Greens functions. We also discuss the non thermal properties of the α-vacua and the necessity of α to change. The conc...
